Personal documents for entry into the country

There are no more border controls on border crossings with Austria, Italy and Hungary. Residents of countries within the Schengen area can stay in Slovenia with a passport or an identity card. Other residents should check the following website for the required documents: www.mzz.gov.si

All motor vehicles must use their passing lights when travelling on all roads, even in daylight. Fog lights can be used when visibility is reduced to less than 50 metres. Foreign drivers are recommended to carry a spare set of electric bulbs for their vehicle (compulsory for residents). A police can impose a fine on the spot for traffic violations; if the fine is paid within 8 days it is reduced by 50%. Visitors: Foreign drivers who refuse to pay a fine on the spot can have their passport and other documents taken from them and can be brought before a police court judge.
Amounts of fines are as follows

• speeding in built-up areas:
  • up to 10 km/h - 100 EUR
  • 11 to 20 km/h - 300 EUR
  • 21 to 30 km/h - 500 EUR
  • 31 to 50 km/h – 1.000 EUR
  • over 50 km/h - min 1.200 EUR and suspension of driving license
• speeding outside built-up areas:
  • up to 20 km/h - 80 EUR
  • 21 to 30 km/h - 160 EUR
  • 31 to 40 km/h - 300 EUR
  • over 40 km/h - min. 500 EUR and suspension of driving license
• speeding on a motorway:
  • up to 20 km/h - 60 EUR
  • 21 to 30 km/h - 120 EUR
  • 31 to 40 km/h - 200 EUR
  • 41 to 50 km/h - 300 EUR
  • over 50 km/h – min. 400 EUR

• driving with excess alcohol in the blood:
  • up to 0.05% (if the driver is unable to drive safely and for profesional / young drivers)- 300 EUR
  • 0.051 to 0.08% - 600 EUR
  • 0.08 to 0.11% - 900 EUR
  • over 0.11% or declining alcohol test - 1.200 EUR + suspension of license

• penalty for causing an accident - 200 - 1.200 EUR
• penalty for leaving the scene of an accident – 1.200 EUR + suspension of license
• prohibited parking - 40 - 200 EUR
• driving under the influence of drugs min. 1.200 EUR + suspension of driving license
• overtaking in no overtaking zones – 300 - 700 EUR
• failure to give way - 300 EUR
• not wearing seat belt - 120 EUR
• failure to stop at red light - 300 EUR
• failure to stop at amber light - 200 EUR
• use of a mobile phone when driving - 120 EUR
• failure to use lights - 40 - 120 EUR
• not wearing a reflective jacket in case of breakdown or accident on expressways and motorways - 40 EUR
• carrying a child less than 150 cm in height without an appropriate child restraint - 200 EUR

Children less than 150 cm in height must use a child restraint system adapted to their weight. Children are allowed to travel on the front seats if the child restraint system is rear-facing and there is no airbag or if it is deactivated. Child restraints must conform to ECE standard 44/03 or 44/04.
Children under the age of 3 may not be transported in vehicles not fitted with child restraints. Children aged 3 or over, measuring less than 150 cm in height, may travel in a vehicle without child restraints but they must occupy a rear seat. Fine = 200 EUR.

From 15.11. to 15.3. and beyond these dates, during winter weather conditions (e.g. during snowfalls, black ice, etc.) private cars and vehicles up to 3.5 t must have winter equipment as follows:

• winter tyres on all four wheels or
• summer tyres on all four wheels + snow chains in car boot

In both cases, the minimum tyre tread depth must be 3 mm.

Vehicles over 3.5 t must have winter tyres at least on the driving wheels or summer tyres on all four wheels + snow chains in car boot.

This regulation applies also to vehicles with foreign registration plates! (new from 2011)

The following driving prohibitions apply to heavy vehicles over 7.5 tonnes:

• every Sunday and public holiday (only non-working day) from 8:00 to 21:00 hours
• Good Friday from 14:00 to 21:00 hours

Summer prohibitions: From the last weekend in June (23.6. 2012) to the first weekend in September (2.9. 2012):

• every Saturday from 8:00 to 13:00,
• every Sunday and public holiday from 8:00 to 21:00

And on the following roads every Saturday from 6:00 to 16:00; every Sunday and public holiday from 8:00 to 22:00

• A1 Ljubljana - Koper
• A1 Ljubljana - border Fernetici (SLO/I)
• A5 border Skofije (SLO/I) - Koper - border Dragonja (SLO/CRO)
• G6 Postojna – Ilirska Bistrica - border Jelsane (SLO/CRO)
• G11 Koper – border Sečovlje (SLO/CRO)

Other restrictions
At times of heavy snowfall, Slovenian roads are closed to goods vehicles with trailers and to vehicles transporting hazardous materials. During snowfalls, drivers of goods vehicles prohibited from travelling must stop their vehicles in good time at suitable locations off the road and may not continue on side roads. When the road is again suitable for all vehicular traffic, the end of the exclusion will be reported by the competent road-maintenance service.

Driving restrictions are also imposed in case of high winds in excess of 80 km/h.
