A police can impose a fine on the spot for traffic violations; if the fine is paid within 8 days it is reduced by 50%.
Visitors: Foreign drivers who refuse to pay a fine on the spot can have their passport and other documents taken from them and can be brought before a police court judge.
Amounts of fines are as follows
- speeding in built-up areas:
- up to 10 km/h - 80 EUR
- 11 to 20 km/h - 250 EUR
- 21 to 30 km/h - 500 EUR
- over 30 km/h - min 1000 EUR and suspension of driving license
- speeding outside built-up areas:
- up to 20 km/h - 60 EUR
- 21 to 30 km/h - 120 EUR
- 31 to 40 km/h - 240 EUR
- over 40 km/h - min. 380 EUR and suspension of driving license
- speeding on a motorway:
- up to 20 km/h - 50 EUR
- 21 to 30 km/h - 100 EUR
- 31 to 40 km/h - 150 EUR
- 41 to 50 km/h - 200 EUR
- over 50 km/h - min 300 EUR
- driving with excess alcohol in the blood:
- up to 0.05% (if the driver is unable to drive safely)- 180 EUR
- 0.051 to 0.08% - 450 EUR
- 0.08 to 0.11% - 570 EUR
- over 0.11% or declining alcohol test - 950 EUR plus possible suspension of license
- penalty for causing an accident - 200-950 EUR
- penalty for leaving the scene of an accident - 500 EUR
- prohibited parking - 40 EUR
- driving under the influence of drugs min. 950 EUR and suspension of driving license
- overtaking in no overtaking zones - 500 EUR
- failure to give way - 300 EUR
- not wearing seat belt - 120 EUR
- failure to stop at red light - 250 EUR
- failure to stop at amber light - 120 EUR
- use of a mobile phone when driving - 120 EUR
- failure to use daylights - 40 EUR
- not wearing a reflective jacket in case of breakdown or accident on expressways and motorways - 40 EUR
- carrying a child under 12 years of age or less than 1,50 m in height without an appropriate child restraint - 120 EUR
