FAQ

Conditions for obtaining a driving test and necessary documents

We advise you to undergo a medical examination in the first step at the Department of occupational, transport and sports medicine, (Medicina dela, prometa in športa), where you obtain a medical certificate proving your ability to drive a motor vehicle of a certain category. Before the inspection, we recommend that you find out what all you need for the inspection and what the conditions and price are for carrying out the inspection at the individual contractor. The medical certificate is valid for three years.

After obtaining a medical certificate, register for a course in first aid (prva pomoč), conducted by regional units of the Red Cross of Slovenia. The passed exam has permanent validity. But once you've done that, it's time to apply to a driving school for a road traffic rules (CPP) course.

A valid identity document, and we also recommend a medical certificate and a first aid test certificate.

Before your start with driving lessons, you must:

  • obtain a valid medical certificate,
  • pass a first aid exam,
  • take the CPP course and
  • pass the theoretical test of CPP knowledge at the exam center.

A valid medical certificate, driving record book (evidenčni karton - EK) and a valid identity document.

Driving with a companion

Driving with a companion is intended for training for the driving test. It is not a substitute for regular and mandatory hours of practical training in a driving school, but it complements it very effectively. With an experienced companion in the passenger seat, a novice driver can gradually gain knowledge; he learns driving maturity from the companion, gathers experience and acquires driving habits. It is, of course, crucial that the companion is a responsible person who would like to teach his student above all about safe driving and proper behavior in traffic.

Candidates who are older than 16 and meet the following conditions can ride with a companion:

  • have completed the theoretical part of the training for category B motor vehicle drivers at a driving school,
  • have passed the theoretical part of the driving test,
  • have completed the practical part of the training at the driving school.

Additional conditions are that their driver's license is not revoked, that they are not subject to the imposed sanction of a ban on driving a motor vehicle of a certain type or category, that they are not subject to the security measure of revocation of their driver's license, that the sanction of the termination of the validity of their driver's license is not imposed on them, and that they do not have any road traffic penalty points in their records (if they already have a driver's license to drive motor vehicles of another category).

Anyone who meets all of the above conditions can drive a passenger car with a companion until they pass the driving test for driving category B motor vehicles, but only for a maximum of two years from the entry of the companion in the driver's license record and the driving record book (evidenčni karton).

The companion can be one of the parents, adoptive parents, guardians, foster parents or another person who meets the following conditions:

  • must be at least 27 years old,
  • must have a valid category B driver's license for at least five years,
  • no more than five penalty points have been imposed on him,
  • resides in the Republic of Slovenia,
  • it must be entered in the candidate's record book, and the L mark on a green background must be installed on the vehicle while the candidate is driving.

Enrollment is carried out by the examination center when it determines that the conditions have been met. Before entering the driver's record book, the test center must provide the accompanying person with appropriate instructions.

A person under the age of 18 may be accompanied by another person, provided that parents, guardians, adoptive parents or foster parents agree to this in writing. If the companion is another person, he can train no more than two people in a period of five years.

When driving a motor vehicle, the person must have a driving record book and a valid medical certificate, and the companion must have a valid driver's license for driving category B vehicles. These documents must be handed over to the police officer for inspection upon request.

The companion is responsible for the safety of the ride and for the offense committed by the person training with the companion, unless he could not have prevented it.

Yes. Up to 6 different people can be entered in the driving record card and only these people can act as a companion.

The cost of the test by driving with a companion is lower. Nevertheless, we advise you not to take the driving test in this way, as driving with a companion is about gaining as much driving experience as possible under the supervision of a companion. In doing so, the companion must be motivated enough to help and advise you in possible difficult-to-understand situations on the road for the driver candidate. It is recommended that you and your companion contact the driving school for more information in case of uncertainty.

It is not possible to obtain a driver's license at the age of 16, but you can exercise the right to drive with a companion at the age of 16 if you have fulfilled all the other obligations listed above.

You can drive with a companion for a maximum of two years after the companion is entered in the registration card. After two years have passed (or even earlier), you must take the practical part of the exam or the test drive.

Course and exam in road traffic rules (CPP)

The CPP course consists of a basic and an additional part. The basic part lasts 16 school hours. For categories A1, A and B, 8 additional hours must be completed, and for category AM, 4 additional hours must be completed. As part of the CPP course, we also offer driving with a category B simulator.

CPP courses are held at AMZS Driving School locations: Dunajska cesta 128 in Ljubljana and Trubarjeva 2 in Trebnje.

Before taking the theory test, you must complete a road traffic rules (CPP) course, obtain a medical certificate and pass a first aid test. The order is not important, but all of the above must be attached when applying for the theory test (CPP exam).

In order to pass the theoretical part of the driving test, which is conducted by the Public Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Traffic Safety (Javna agencija za varnost prometa - AVP), the driver candidate registers with the Administrative Unit (Upravna enota). Each candidate is given a username and password to log into the system and answer 40 questions using a computer. The questions are of the optional type, but two or more correct answers are possible for individual questions. The performance of CPP tests is publicly available for individual exam centers.

We announce the courses and publish them on our website, where you can register for the selected date.

Practical part of the training

You can arrange driving lessons on the fly, and as a rule, the schedule is drawn up in advance for each upcoming working week and coordinated with your driving instructor.

If there is a valid reason (illness, feeling unwell, etc.), make an appointment with the teacher for the next appointment. If you cancel the ride without a reason, it is necessary to pay the so-called waiting hour. It is a minimum compensation for the driving instructor because he was unable to work during the canceled hour.

Relational driving is driving in which the candidate drives a total of two hours, during which time he must drive a distance of at least 40 kilometers to a distant place and back. At least 3 such trips are planned as part of the educational program. One regional drive must be carried out at night and one on the highway.

You they can, because even driving schools are subject to road traffic control.

Test drive

A candidate for a driver must master both the theoretical part and the practical part of driving. The examination board thus has the legitimate right to check knowledge of theory during the practical part of the test, but only in exceptional cases decides on the result of the driving test.

The price of obtaining a driver's license

You can view the price list and packages of all AMZS Driving School services on our website.

  • cash payment at our reception offices,
  • payment in installments with Diners Club payment cards and NLB MasterCard, Karanta and Visa payment cards (does not apply to loan cards and NLB MasterCard business cards),
  • transfers to TRR AMZS d. d. PE Driving school, at NLB 02922-0017874767,
  • electronic payment method (Klik, Proklik, Teledom...).

All obligations must be settled before the end of the training, each driving hour must be paid in advance.

The minimum prescribed number of hours for most categories (even for B category) is 20 hours for training and one hour when the driving exam takes place. It is therefore necessary to pay for at least 21 hours of driving.

Time frame for obtaining a driver's license

The candidate will need roughly one working day to obtain the medical certificate (usually 1 to 2 hours).

The first aid course lasts two days (usually 10 school hours), and the first aid exam is expected to last one working day or 1 to 2 hours.

The CPP course lasts a minimum of six days (usually 24 school hours), while the theoretical knowledge test lasts another working day (usually a few hours).

Driving takes the candidate at least 20 school hours, and the duration in number of days is not prescribed. As a rule, it takes less than two months, minimum about two weeks. The test drive for category B takes one working day and lasts about 1 school hour.

Additional training for safe driving for novice drivers takes a minimum of 8 hours. If we add everything together, taking into account the minimum prescribed number of hours, the entire education lasts just under 50 hours.

The length of education depends on several factors, such as the current occupation of the driving instructor, the course of CPP courses, sick leave, vacations, etc.

The CPP course lasts at least 5 days, with a maximum of three hours per day (the course otherwise lasts 6 days).

A medical examination usually lasts a few hours.

The first aid course lasts 10 school hours over two days, and the exam takes an hour.

Drivers' questions

Foreigners

Slovenian driver's licenses are issued by administrative units, so we advise you to inquire about changing your driver's license beforehand at your administrative unit, as obtaining a Slovenian driver's license based on a foreign one depends on the country the driver comes from.

No. As a rule, foreigners coming from EU countries do not need to take a driving test in the Republic of Slovenia, as they can also obtain a Slovenian driver's license based on their foreign driver's license. For more information and details, we advise you to contact your administrative unit.

As a rule, the criteria for obtaining a driving test in different countries differ to such an extent that it is difficult to talk about the necessary number of hours of driving for foreigners, since prior driving knowledge can vary greatly. The law does not prescribe a minimum number of driving hours for foreigners who want to obtain a Slovenian driving license.

No. Road traffic rules tests are not provided for foreigners who already have a driver's license of their country.

A foreigner may drive in the Republic of Slovenia with his driver's license issued by the competent authority of the foreign country, and subject to reciprocity, for one year from the date of registration of residence in the Republic of Slovenia.

No. The estimated fine for the offense in case of continuing to drive after one year has passed is at least 500 €.

No. Driving instructors and test driving assessors do their best to present your possible mistakes in an understandable way and give a test score even if they don't speak your language.

Novice drivers

Yes, participation in safe driving course is mandatory.

A novice driver can take part in safe driving course after 6 months have passed from the date of passing the driving test until the driver's license expires.

Safe driving course lasts one working day, from 8 to 9 hours.

A novice driver can have a maximum of 7 penalty points.

Returnees

No. The same training program is planned for returning drivers as for drivers taking their driving test for the first time.

No. Driving test assessors have the same criteria for all categories of drivers.

Yes. The criteria for the theoretical part of the driving test have been tightened and are relatively high. Although the criteria for the practical part of the driving test have not changed to such an extent, the traffic is denser, the pace of life is faster, the transport infrastructure is more demanding and the vehicles are more powerful. These are just a few reasons why it is more difficult to get a driving test today than years ago.

The prescribed minimum number of hours completed is 20 and an additional hour of test driving. Previous knowledge, driving experience and acquired habits can vary greatly among returnees, so the final number of hours is difficult to estimate.

Owners of specially adapted vehicles, peoples with disabilities or owners of vehicles with automatic gearboxex

The success of any candidate in the driving test is very difficult to predict with certainty, because we are all very different people. Judging by experience, it is best for candidates who are in an unequal position compared to others, motorically or otherwise, to take the driving test in a vehicle with an automatic transmission (even when they pass the test, they are only allowed to drive such vehicles). In any case, an assessment of your ability to take the driving test must be given by a doctor when the medical certificate is issued.

Yes, even if it is a vehicle with an automatic transmission, you can train and take the driving test with your vehicle.

Penalty points

Yes. A maximum of 4 penalty points can be deleted from a driver once every two years. For this, he must meet special conditions (medical examination with counseling, additional training for safe driving...).

If you are not a novice driver, the driving test ceases to be valid when the 18th penalty point is reached.
